Travel Awards

SIGIR’24 will provide several types of travel grants, including two student travel grants and one open to students and non-students. Please note that each attendee can apply to all types but can use only one of these travel grants at SIGIR’24. Combining multiple travel grants is not permitted.

DEI Travel Grant

The ACM Special Interest Group on Information Retrieval (SIGIR) would like its conferences to be as inclusive as possible. ACM SIGIR therefore offers financial support to those participating from the least developed countries as designated by the United Nations. People from these countries, including both students or non-students, who have an accepted submission at the SIGIR'24 conference (including tutorials and workshops) and the ICTIR'24 conference, are eligible to apply.

People who this applies to can reach out directly to the DEI chairs (Hussein Suleman and Suzan Verberne) for assistance, by sending an email to SIGIR24-DEI@acm.org.

We handle the requests on a case-by-case basis. The deadline for applications is June 1st 2024, but earlier requests can be handled earlier.

U.S.-based Student Travel Grant

Thanks to the generous support from the U.S. National Science Foundation, we will provide scholarship awards to selected US-based students attending the SIGIR 2024 conference.

The award will cover the cost of registration and some travel expenses. The awards will be competitive in the sense that not every student attendee will receive an NSF Travel Award.

Awardees are expected to register for the main conference and make their own arrangements for travel and accommodation.

Eligibility

Applicants need to be a full-time student at a US-based academic institution.

Applicants do not need to have an accepted contribution at SIGIR 2024 to be eligible. Minority students such as female participants, students from under-represented groups and institutions, and students in financial need, will be given priority. Applicants who have an accepted contribution will be given priority.

Covered Expenses

For each selected recipient, the award will provide up to $1,000 to (partially) cover their travel cost. Covered expenses include registration, airfare, ground transportation, lodging, and meals. The award will be distributed in the form of reimbursement based after a recipient provides a list of itemized costs and receipts.

Airfare: The NSF travel award requires recipients to book an Economy class ticket in a timely manner and use a US-based airline, with exceptions specified on the following page (Fly America Act, https://www.gsa.gov/policy-regulations/policy/travel-management-policy-overview/fly-america-act).

Lodging: If a recipient books the conference hotel, the award will reimburse the block rates negotiated by SIGIR. If a recipient does not book the conference hotel, the award will reimburse a maximum room rate of $264 plus taxes and fees.

Meals: The award will reimburse meals at per diem rates.

Application Procedure

The applicant must fill out the form below and their academic/research advisor must complete a statement of support. A link to the advisor will be sent directly as soon as the applicant submits the application form.

Application submission is due on May 15, 2024 (AoE). To be considered for the travel award, both the application and statement of support must be submitted before the above due date.

ACM SIGIR Student Travel Grant

SIGIR is pleased to offer Student Travel Grants for students presenting their accepted contributions at SIGIR 2024.

To be eligible, the student must be (1) the author of an accepted contribution, (2) the one presenting the accepted contribution, and (3) a SIGIR member (SIGIR student travel grants are only open to SIGIR members).

These awards are competitive, i.e., not every applicant will receive a grant. We will prioritize students presenting the accepted contributions on the main conference track; students from underrepresented countries; and students who have not received a grant in the past.

To be considered for a grant, the student must apply and their academic advisor must complete a statement of support (a link to the advisor will be sent directly as soon as the student provides all the information requested in their application).

For awardees, the grant will cover the cost of in-person registration and USD $1,200 towards travel and accommodation costs.

The application period is from March 25, 2024 to April 5, 2024 (AoE). The application and statement of support must be submitted before the end of the application period.

Notifications will be sent by April 10th at the latest. Please do not register for the conference ahead of this date as SIGIR Awards cannot reimburse you for the registration. If awarded a grant, you will receive a code for a registration fee waiver.
